Wanted fugitive leads deputies on multi-county pursuit that ends near Hallsville

WANTED FUGITIVE LEADS SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES IN A PURSUIT THAT ENDS NEAR HALLSVILLE

Zachary Poland, 24, of Columbia, MO

Narrative: 

On March 23, 2020, at approximately 10:01 AM, a Callaway County Sheriff’s Office deputy stopped a vehicle in the 2000 block of County Road 269 near Stephens reference a suspicious activity investigation.  Soon after the vehicle stopped and the deputy was approaching; the driver, identified as Zachary Poland, 24, of Columbia, MO fled the scene in the vehicle.  Deputies pursued Poland northbound on County Road 269, north of Stephens.  Near County Road 274, Poland slowed and a passenger exited the vehicle on foot.  The passenger was taken into custody there by deputies.

Minutes later, a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper spotted Poland near the intersection of State Road E and State Road M near Hatton.  As the state trooper attempted to stop Poland, he again fled southbound on State Road M.  Poland ultimately traveled onto eastbound County Road 240 and then State Road FF southbound.  As the Poland was nearing the Old Highway 40 intersection near Kingdom City, the trooper discontinued pursuit.  Poland ultimately turned onto westbound Old Highway 40.

The Callaway County Sheriff was traveling eastbound on Old Highway 40 approaching State Road FF at this time.  Upon Poland seeing the Sheriff approaching, he began driving westbound in the eastbound lane in a head-on fashion.  As Poland was nearing, the Sheriff took evasive action and drove off the roadway to allow Poland to pass.  A third vehicle pursuit then entailed.

Poland ultimately entered westbound Interstate 70 at the State Road M/HH interchange.  Near the 140 mile marker, another state trooper was positioned roadside to deploy tire deflation devices.  Upon approaching the state trooper, Poland purposefully drove onto the shoulder and was traveling directly toward the state trooper and his patrol vehicle.  Just before reaching the state trooper and his vehicle, Poland swerved back into the driving lane of Interstate 70.

At the State Road J/DD interchange, Poland exited and again fled northbound on County Road 269.  Poland ultimately onto County Road 286, Maupin Road (Boone County), State Road Z (Boone County), State Road HH (Boone County), Kircher Road (Boone County) and Mount Hope Road (Boone County).  Once traveling east on Mount Hope Road, Poland was approaching numerous state troopers whom were stopped and awaiting his arrival.  Poland then pulled off the roadway, exited his vehicle, and surrendered.

It was determined Poland was a fugitive in Saline and Boone counties for numerous charges including Burglary.  Poland was transported to the Callaway County Jail where he is being without a bond setting for the fugitive warrants in addition to Callaway County felony charges including Resisting Arrest.
