Deputies investigate a physical domestic disturbance involving a firearm

PRESS RELEASE

Date:  May 2, 2017

Arrested person information:

N/A

Reporting officer:  Sheriff Clay Chism

Narrative:

On May 1, 2017 at 5:12 p.m., Callaway County Sheriff’s Office personnel responded to the 7000 block of State Road D north of Portland for a reported physical domestic disturbance.  Information provided to deputies while responding was that a 50 year male had been shot during the disturbance; suffering non-life threatening injuries.  Prior to the arrival of deputies, the shooting victim had left the residence and was located at another location in the area.  The victim was extremely uncooperative with deputies and was ultimately transported to a Columbia hospital by Callaway County EMS for non-life threatening injuries.  An injury update is not available.

Deputies subsequently make contact with the other person involved in the disturbance (the shooter) whom too had contacted the Sheriff’s Office for assistance.  The shooter cooperated fully with the investigation and at this time, it is believed the shooting occurred in self-defense during a physical disturbance initiated by the shooting victim.  The investigation will continue and due to the nature of the situation, all reports will be referred to the Callaway County Prosecuting Attorney for review once the investigation is complete.

The investigation is ongoing and NO FURTHER INFORMATION WILL BE RELEASED AT THIS TIME.

Deputies were assisted by the South Callaway Fire Protection District and Callaway County EMS.

End of press release.
