On October 16, 2014 at 5:21 p.m., Callaway County emergency service officials were notified of a missing / injured person investigation that initiated in Boone County; victim being 53 year old Randall Fennewald of Columbia.
Boone County authorities had been searching the Mark Twain National Forest grounds for several hours in Boone County based on a call that Fennewald was injured and medical assistance was needed. Information was subsequently developed that Fennewald could possibly be located in Callaway County; therefore Callaway County responders were notified and proceeded accordingly to assist in the search.
At 6:55 p.m., the Callaway County Sheriff’s Office was advised that Fennewald had been found in Callaway County, deceased, near the Cedar Creek, via Missouri State Highway Patrol aircraft. Geographically, Fennewald was near the Callaway County Road 354 access point to the forest grounds. The terrain is this area is rugged and treacherous for nighttime operations; therefore the recovery effort was lengthy.
Law enforcement and fire officials ultimately used a boat to recover Fennewald from the area. An autopsy is scheduled for 10/17/2014 at the Boone / Callaway Medical Examiner’s Office in Columbia. While this is an open law enforcement investigation, foul play is not suspected at this time.
